Iggy Azalea Wins First-Ever Award
Iggy Azalea won the first of the six American Music Awards she was nominated for on Sunday night, taking home the trophy for best rap/hip-hop album.
But the award wasn’t just her first AMA or her first award of the night, it was her first award ever, she announced when she accepted the prize.
The 24-year-old Australian hip-hop artist won for her debut album The New Classic, beating out veterans Eminem and Drake.
In her acceptance speech, Azalea said she was particularly honored to be nominated with those artists.
“It means so much to me that it’s for best hip-hop because that’s what inspired me to move to America and pursue my dreams and that’s what helped me when I was a teenager to escape and to get through my life and to better times,” she said. “It just means so much that I can stand here against Eminem and Drake and come out with this. It’s amazing.”
Bringing T.I. with her onstage, Azalea also thanked him for supporting her.
Azalea also performed, twice, on the show, including a finale with Jennifer Lopez.
The Pitbull-hosted show also featured performances from Ariana Grande, 5 Seconds of Summer, Mary J. Blige, Charli XCX, Fergie, Lorde, One Direction, Sam Smith, Garth Brooks, Selena Gomez, Imagine Dragons and Mr. Worldwide himself.
Azalea was the most-nominated artist going into the show, with six nods, and she went home with two awards, the same as the number of trophies Beyonce received.
