Wyclef will announce his plan to run for President of the Haiti soon, according to reports.
According to an unidentified source, Wyclef Jean will reveal his plans to run for office this Thursday (August 5th) just two days prior to the country’s deadline.
The rapper made headlines earlier this year after he sprang into action to aid his native country following the January 12th earthquake that ravaged the already impoverished land. Through his organization, Yele Haiti, he raised over $10 million in less than three months.
“I think if Wyclef is allowed to run he will have a straight victory,” said former Presidential candidate Himmler Rebu to Reuters.
Jean has maintained his citizenship in the country and according to political analysts he shouldn’t have any trouble winning because of his connections in the financial and political circles. His uncle, Raymond Alcide Joseph, who has served as Haiti’s ambassador of the United States since 2005, will also reportedly lend his support.
As one-third of rap group The Fugees and as a solo artist, Wyclef has sold millions of records. Fugees’ sophomore effort, The Score, alone has sold over 18 million records worldwide. He has also produced a number of records for the likes of Shakira, Santana, and Destiny’s Child.
The Presidential election in Haiti will take place on November 28th.
