Rihanna Named Top Selling Digital Artist

RIHANNA LIVE AT THE O2

Date: Monday, January 9, 2012

Adele may have ruled 2011 with the top album and single and Kanye West may be watching the throne, but it’s Rihanna who’s actually sitting on the throne, as far as digital tracks are concerned. The ”You Da One” pop minx has captured the title of best-selling digital artist of all time by Nielsen SoundScan, thanks to a whopping 47.5 million paid downloads of hits like “Umbrella,” “Rude Boy” and “We Found Love.”

Other artists have been in the game longer — such as Black Eyed Peas (No. 2 on the ranking, with 42.4 million), Eminem (No. 3, 42.2 million) and Beyoncé (No. 8, 30.4 million) — but RiRi has truly carved out her niche as a singles artist.

Of course, dropping releases at the rapid pace of one album per year doesn’t hurt. Check the top 10 best-selling digital artists below, and let us know your thoughts on where your favorites landed.

The 10 best-selling digital artists to date:

1. Rihanna (47,571,000)
2. Black Eyed Peas (42,405,000)
3. Eminem (42,290,000)
4. Lady Gaga (42,078,000)
5. Taylor Swift (41,821,000)
6. Katy Perry (37,620,00)
7. Lil Wayne (36,788,000)

Nicki Minaj’s Turns Gospel (VIDEO)

Nicki-Minaj585

As reported by The BoomBox, Nicki Minaj’s smash hit ‘Super Bass’ has received unlikely covers by everyone from country music star Taylor Swift to 8-year-old YouTube sensation Sophia Grace Brownlee. Now, it looks like the female MC’s hit has gotten the remix treatment from one of the most unlikely sources of all.

A group of University of Florida students have remade Minaj’s rap song into a Christian tune about falling for a fellow Christ lover, and have renamed it ‘Super Grace!’ The parody was written by University of Florida student Raychel Manko, who made an accompanying music video with her UF friends to enhance the holy experience.

In the visuals, Manko pays tribute to Minaj’s eccentric fashion sense by rocking an electric-blue wig.

She raps in a church while standing at a pulpit, replacing Nicki’s lyrics with, “This one is for the boys with the boomin’ system/ Top down, AC with the coolin’ system/ When he come up in the club, he be blazin’ up/ Got stacks on deck like he savin’ up,” with her own holy verse, “this one is for the boys with the true religion/ And love with the lord and done with sinnin’/ When he come up in the church he be praisin’ up/ Always tithes, but he’s still savin’ up.”

Manko herself calls the spoof “a humorous, somewhat exaggerated commentary about the single Christian girl’s struggle to appreciate the wonderful Christian man in her life while still guarding her heart and waiting patiently upon the Lord.”

Kanye West Says Taylor Swift, Dixie Chicks, and Ray Charles Didn’t Deserve Grammy’s

Rap News, Hip Hop News - Gutta World

Kanye West has strong opinions about awards shows. Anyone who has forgotten this salient fact can find a reminder in West’s latest explosive interview with Access Hollywood. The rap superstar spoke out against what he sees as undeserving recent winners of the Grammy Award for Album of the Year…including, you guessed it, Taylor Swift. Oh dear. Here we go again!

“Where’s our instant replay clock?” West asked, according to Access Hollywood. “Why are the last four Albums of the Year: Taylor Swift, Dixie Chicks, Ray Charles and Herbie Hancock? Like, you know, with all due respect… that’s inaccurate.” (Speaking of inaccuracies, he forgot to mention Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, who won in 2009. Maybe he’s a fan.)

Instead, West suggested a few albums he’d rather have seen win. “It’s like ‘SexyBack’ — you know what I’m saying? Like [Justin Timberlake's] FutureSex/LoveSounds, Gnarls Barkley. How about Usher — Confessions? How about albums that sold 10 million?”

Lest you misunderstand the motivations behind these words, West clarified the larger social significance involved: “I pinpoint the Grammys and the VMAs because they have to take responsibility, because they mean something to us. Little kids, 6 years [old], that are singing in front of the mirror. They’re also thinking about their Grammy speech; they’re thinking about when there will be a VMA so these people, whoever run them… they have to take some responsibility to say what really happened in culture this year because we’re marking it down.”

What do you think? Is West right about those Grammy winners? Did Justin Timberlake deserve to win over Dixie Chicks, or Usher over Ray Charles?

Taylor Swift Does SNL… Let’s Just Say Revenge is SWEET!!!

Posted: Monday – November 9, 2009

Taylor Swift was the host of SNL this past weekend, and she finally got her revenge on Kanye in a very funny way. In our opinion, it was the best way. Even if Kanye was watching, which he probably was, all he could do was laugh.
