“Whos Rell Derty? Hes that Nigga whos killin everybodys flow on the streets”. That is what people began to say about him not too long ago in the Bay Area. Rell Derty, son of a jazz musician, was born Jai Motley in East Palo Alto. At 3 months old Rell moved to Philadelphia, PA with his Grandmother. He lived there until he was 11 years old and the moved to Hayward, CA with his aunt and Grandmother. “Shit my Grandma saw people dropin left and right and just wanted us to get the hell up outta there. So we picked up and moved to Cali”. They lived in Hayward for 4 years but then had to move because the cost of living was getting too expensive. So he then moved across the bay to South San Francisco into the notorious Cypress Park area.

Rell Began to become familiar with Hip-Hop music in 1988. His Aunt Maria always used to play it around him all the time. He began to start mimicking the songs word for word and the he would just turn them into his own songs. Later when he got older he started to get his name out there with his first rap group L.A.S. (Lyrical Assault Squad). Rell Says that back in the L.A.S. days everything was just pure fun. No pressure.”L.A.S. back then is what we wanted to do. We were just flowin for fun”. We would go back and fourth and out do each others verses. Shit I didnt even know how to count bars back then. we was just pure flowin He then started doing shows, battled anybody on the streets and in school. So from all this, his name started to spread by word of mouth.

“Rell has the potential to become a very hard hitting artist not just to the Bay but to the whole world”, Says T.B. producer and CEO of CTDC Records. Rell met up with T.B. in 1999. T.B. liked Rell a lot but he was signed under Cutthroat Records by CEO Tavio Reyes. T.B. and Rell still continued to do tracks together. “We were working so much together Tavio and I just decided to combine both our labels to create, CTDC records. That stands for Cutthroat Dymond Cutz”.

Rell has a wide range of influences. From Big-L, Rakim, and Big Daddy Kane to Michael Jackson, Jimmy Hendrix and Luther Vandross. You can tell in his music he has been well seasoned by many genres of music. Rell Derty speaks the truth on each and every beat he lays his vocals over. His songs vary from just speaking about plain life in general to, Hood Shit, and going hard. Rell captures all life in the simple touch of pen to paper. The brain of Rell Derty cannot be taught but only absorbed through his music.
