Nicki Minaj Says Rap Career Came By Accident, Wants To Be An Actress

Nicki Minaj took her unique rap flow all the way to the top of the pop music industry, but the Young Money First Lady recently revealed that music wasn’t her first career choice.

In fact, she says it happened by accident, and instead, wanted to become an actress initially.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly at Sunday’s (June 5) MTV Movie Awards, Minaj explained that she has taken lessons, and plans to make her dream a reality following her upcoming tour with Britney Spears.

“I went to school to be an actress. I never expected to be a rapper. It just fell in my lap,” said the rapper. “I would like to get an acting gig. I hope that when I am done with the tour, I can go back and do some acting. That is my long-term goal.”

Her acting aspirations won’t be the typical transitions you see for a rapper/actor though. Nicki says she definitely won’t be doing any straight-to-DVD type releases that most rappers self-produce and release to their fans. She wants to be a player in Hollywood.

“I want to work with Will Smith, because he’s a very successful rapper-turned-actor and therefore a role model,” Minaj said. “And Tim Burton because I love his crazy imagination. He comes up with these characters that are just so fascinating and the costumes and just creates these whole worlds.”

As far as actual roles, and any movies she’s interested in, that remains unknown.

Nicki Minaj Cuts Diddy As Manager…AGAIN

The Young Money rapstress switches up her management team and links up with Gee Roberson and Kyambo “HipHop” Joshua.

More than a year after signing with Sean “Diddy” Combs and James Cruz as managers, Nicki Minaj is no longer associated with the business moguls. According to XXLMag.com, the Harajuku Barbie is now being managed by Gee Roberson and Kyambo “HipHop” Joshua from Hip-Hop Since 1978, which also manages Lil Wayne, Drake and more.

The news may be surprising for Lil’ Kim fans, as Roberson and Joshua previously served as A&Rs for Atlantic Records for her 2005 album The Naked Truth. The Queen Bee also made a similar move earlier this year by linking up with Fendi, who is credited with launching Nicki’s career.

Before Diddy, Nicki was managed by Debra Antney’s firm, but switched over after firing Antney in April 2010. Rumor has it that she expected Diddy to be more hands-on with her career, and decided to move on when she realized he wasn’t as involved as expected.

Posted: Tuesday – November 9, 2010

Recently, pop princess Rihanna sat down with MTV News to discuss her work with breakthrough female emcee Nicki Minaj, who’s much hyped-over debut album Pink Friday hits stores on November 23. According to Rihanna, the female-only collaboration occurred not once but twice — first on her 2009 album Rated R and again on her latest effort Loud, which also hits stores later this month.

“We did work together on music for [Loud] as well as [for] Rated R. It was the end of the album, but she was sending me these incredible songs,” Rihanna told MTV News of her work with Minaj.

“I wanted some up-tempo stuff from her that was kind of gangsta, but she sent me these ballads and they were beautiful and I couldn’t believe that it was a female MC writing these songs. She’s really talented and I want to work with her again.”

Currently, Minaj appears on Raining Men, a single that was recently leaked off Loud and features the self-proclaimed Black Barbie rapping in an adopted Caribbean accent. As for Rihanna’s work on Minaj’s Pink Friday, the Barbados-born beauty kept mum about the details.

“We also worked together on her album. I can’t say…actually, the reason I can’t tell you is because I don’t know the official title of the song. It might be Too Fly, I’m not sure if that’s the confirmed [title],” the pop star said. However, following the interview MTV confirmed that the track is simply called Fly.

Currently, Loud, which is scheduled for release on November 16, already has two popular singles to its name — Only Girl (In the World) and What’s My Name.

In a previous interview with MTV, Rihanna also confirmed that the new album will be much more upbeat than Rated R. “A lot has, I won’t say changed, but a lot has evolved since then,” she said. “A lot of growing up, a lot of responsibility in terms of taking control of my business and stuff like that.”

POSTED: MONDAY – OCTOBER 18, 2010

Early Monday morning (October 18), breakthrough female emcee Nicki Minaj announced that rap mogul Diddy has been “dismissed” as her manager in favor of industry vet Benny Medina. Medina, who famously managed the careers of superstars like Mariah Carey and Brandy, will be the third manager for the Young Money rapper this year.

According to a statement by Minaj, “By now, everyone should know that I am really strict when it comes to my representation. I had sympathy for [Diddy], however, I feel as if I haven’t gotten the guidance the manager is supposed to give his client. Personally, I feel like I’m being managed by mother. ”

“Even if you play the smallest role on my team,” she continued. “I wish to see progress. I’d like to thank him for everything he has done for me; for taking me under his wing. I wish him the best with repping Rick [Ross]. But now that my album is about to drop, it’s time to get serious and stop playing games.”

This month, Minaj took home 3 BET Awards including Best New Artist and Best Female Hip-Hop Artist. Prior to Diddy, Minaj, whose much-anticipated album Pink Friday is set to drop on November 23, enlisted Waka Flocka Flame’s mother Debbie Atney as manager until April 2010.
