What a match up bringing 50 Cent and ‘Nashville’ star Hayden Panettiere together to announce Nicki Minaj as the winner of the Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Artist category at the 2012 American Music Awards. It’s pretty awesome to see the size difference between the two, but what’s head scratching is the fact that Panettiere stars as an uber famous country singer on her show, and would’ve been a shoe in to announce the winner of a country artist category or country performer — but hey, we don’t set up the show, despite our best efforts.

Chris Lighty, a hip-hop mogul who helped the likes of Sean “Diddy” Combs, 50 Cent and Mariah Carey attain not only hit records, but also lucrative careers outside music, was found dead in his New York City apartment Thursday in an apparent suicide. He was 44. He was found at his home in the Bronx with a gunshot to the head and was pronounced dead there, police said. No note was recovered, but a 9 mm handgun was found and there was no sign of forced entry, said Paul Browne, New York police spokesman. The shooting appears to be self-inflicted, authorities said.

Even when the man they called “Jimmy Henchman” was on trial earlier this month for running a cocaine ring, his ties to the feud that led to the murders of two hip-hop legends preceded him. On Friday, Manhattan officials charged James Rosemond with arranging the murder of an associate of the rapper 50 Cent. On June 5, Rosemond was convicted in a Brooklyn federal court of peddling millions of dollars worth of cocaine. Rosemond, 47, was indicted for conspiring with five other men to kill the associate, Lowell Fletcher, in 2009. “This has not been a good month for Jimmy the Henchman,” Raymond W. Kelly, the New York police commissioner, said in a statement.

50 Cent has confirmed that his next official LP, Five (Murder By Numbers), is set to drop on July 3. In a wide-ranging conversation with Philadelphia radio station Hot 107.9, which comes off his recent appearance on “Oprah’s Next Chapter,” Fif also touched on label politics and boxer Floyd Mayweather’s stint in prison. The new album, which follows the back-to-basics Lost Tape and The Big Ten freebies, will be the last in his turbulent deal with Interscope. “I said I was gonna put a record out that was completely up to album standard, and I’m gonna do that. I worked on this album for a long time. It’s been three years,” he said.
