Nicki Minaj Says Rap Career Came By Accident, Wants To Be An Actress

Nicki Minaj took her unique rap flow all the way to the top of the pop music industry, but the Young Money First Lady recently revealed that music wasn’t her first career choice.

In fact, she says it happened by accident, and instead, wanted to become an actress initially.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly at Sunday’s (June 5) MTV Movie Awards, Minaj explained that she has taken lessons, and plans to make her dream a reality following her upcoming tour with Britney Spears.

“I went to school to be an actress. I never expected to be a rapper. It just fell in my lap,” said the rapper. “I would like to get an acting gig. I hope that when I am done with the tour, I can go back and do some acting. That is my long-term goal.”

Her acting aspirations won’t be the typical transitions you see for a rapper/actor though. Nicki says she definitely won’t be doing any straight-to-DVD type releases that most rappers self-produce and release to their fans. She wants to be a player in Hollywood.

“I want to work with Will Smith, because he’s a very successful rapper-turned-actor and therefore a role model,” Minaj said. “And Tim Burton because I love his crazy imagination. He comes up with these characters that are just so fascinating and the costumes and just creates these whole worlds.”

As far as actual roles, and any movies she’s interested in, that remains unknown.

Ja Rule Is Going To Prison

Multiplatinum-selling rapper Ja Rule is set to go to prison, but he’s leaving fans with an album on the way.

The rapper-actor – whose gravelly voice, thuggish tough talk and duets with R&B divas made him one of rap’s stars in the early 2000s – is set to be sentenced Wednesday to two years in a New York prison.

“My last day out,” he tweeted Tuesday afternoon, adding that he was spending it at the movies with his family.

Ja Rule, 35, pleaded guilty in December to attempted criminal possession of a weapon, resolving a nearly 4-year-old case.

Police said they found a loaded .40-caliber semiautomatic gun in a rear door of his $250,000-plus Maybach sports car, which they’d said they’d stopped for speeding as he left a star-laden concert at Manhattan’s Beacon Theatre on July 22, 2007. Rap superstar Lil Wayne was arrested separately after headlining the same show. He later pleaded guilty to the same charge, spending about eight months in a city jail last year.

“Laws are laws,” Ja Rule said Monday on “Good Day New York,” which airs on New York’s Fox 5 TV station. “There’s nothing I could really do but own up to the situation.”

“You know, I try not to regret anything I do in life, because you go through life and you do things, and you man up to them. You own them,” he added.

Born Jeffrey Atkins, Ja Rule emerged as a hardcore rapper in the late 1990s but then became known for his collaborations with female pop singers, including Jennifer Lopez and Ashanti. He scored a best rap album Grammy Award nomination in 2002 with “Pain Is Love.” He also has appeared in movies, including the 2001 film “The Fast and the Furious” and 2003′s “Scary Movie 3.”

He’s recently been wrapping up a new album, “Pain Is Love 2,” but he told “Good Day New York” he’s also been trying to prepare himself mentally for prison. He lives in Upper Saddle River, N.J., with his wife and three children.

Meanwhile, he also pleaded guilty in a New Jersey federal court in March to failing to pay taxes on more than $3 million in income. He faces up to three years in prison in that case, though his lawyers are expected to try to arrange for his sentences to be served at the same time.

Ja Rule had some previous brushes with the law, including pleading guilty to assault for punching someone at a Toronto nightclub in 2004. He was fined $1,200.

He recently told TMZ.com he plans to keep busy behind bars by writing a book, getting his GED and possibly taking up the guitar.

“I’m gonna try to make good of my time while I’m inside,” he said.

His expected sentence will make him the latest in a long line of rappers to do time. Hip-hop stars including Tupac Shakur, Lil’ Kim, Foxy Brown, Shyne, Mystikal, Gucci Mane and T.I. have been in jail or prison for periods ranging from months to years.

Under state prison policies, Ja Rule might be able to shave up to six months off his sentence by meeting requirements for good behavior and other standards.

Snoop Dogg Pitching American Idol Style Show For Rap And Hip Hop Artists

SnoopDogg585x320

This was probably a long time coming, and although I don’t watch the talent-based reality shows (especially not the ones dedicated to singing…So You Think You Can Dance might find its way onto my screen from time to time), it makes sense that the next one would involve the search for the next great rap/hip-hop artist.

Who’s leading the charge for this show intent on discovering untapped hip-hop talent? Snoop Dogg (pronounced Snoop Dee Oh Double Gee, for those not hip to the lingo). That’s right, in a recent interview with the The New York Post, Snoop revealed his plans to create, as the paper calls it, “rap’s answer to American Idol.” The paper’s source suggests that some networks have been biting, including E! and MTV. They add that Snoop’s currently looking to recruit some celebrity hip-hoppers to fill the panel, with names like Jay-Z and Wiz Khalifa being tossed about.

Snoop himself describes the show like this: “I’m looking for a deal from a network to find America’s hottest ‘hood artists.” There you have it, hood artists, you may get your chance to become famous the new-fashioned way.

Busta Rhymes Bounces Back With New Album

bustarhymes585

Busta Rhymes is back with a new album and mindset adding on to his multi-platinum career. The Brooklyn emcee wouldn’t reveal the name of the album, but said it would be along the lines of When Disaster Strikes, The Coming, Extinction Level Event, Anarchy and Genesis.

Scoffing at the notion of retirement, Busta had a breakout year doing features, most notably Jay-Z and Kanye West’s H.A.M and Nicki Minaj’s Roman’s Revenge.

“I’m not going anywhere anytime soon.” Busta remarked whenever someone mentions him retiring. The 39-year-old rapper has seen and done it all since entering the game in 1991:

Death Row Record’s dominance over the industry; how Biggie, Nas and Wu-Tang Clan revived New York; the untimely deaths of Biggie and Tupac; the South’s dominance; the rise of underground artists like Wiz Khalifa. Through it all Busta still remained relevant releasing hit-after-hit, selling millions of records and collaborating with the biggest names in the industry.

He promises to give fans some new flavor as well as some of the old rapid-fire-flow Busta is known for. “I’m really taking my time with this one,” Busta says of his new, untitled release. “I’m going into this one different than the last album. I don’t want to start talking about producers and album titles just yet because I don’t want to spoil anything. But you know I’m going to come out with that good sh*t . I promise you that. I’ve been in the business for a minute and I still have a hunger for it. I’m not going to stop until the people tell me to.”

Meanwhile, he’s enjoying his #1 single Look At Me Now featuring Chris Brown and Lil Wayne and the growing buzz from Welcome To My Hood with DJ Khaled. Both tracks will appear on his new album, which he says is 90% done.

Busta isn’t going anywhere anytime soon let alone retiring. “This is my sh*t. I am back in a space where I can talk about the things I love to talk about and touch on things people are a little uncomfortable talking about and really expose the truths, and do it in a way where it’s so extremely entertaining. I feel supreme right now,” stated Busta Rhymes.

His album is slated to be released in September.

Sean Kingston In Stable Condition After Accident

seankingston585

Singer Sean Kingston was hospitalized after a watercraft accident Sunday (May 29) in Miami. The Jamaican singer was riding his jet ski with an unidentified female passenger when he crashed into the Palm Island Bridge in Miami Beach.

Kingston was rushed to Ryder Trauma Center for his injuries where he was moved to ICU on Monday. An off-duty Coast Guard pulled him from the wreck saying Sean was responsive but coughed up blood. The unidentified female was unharmed in the accident, but was taken to the hospital as a precaution. There’s been no word on her condition yet.

Sean Kingston is now stabilized and has moved from the trauma unit to ICU and “Sean’s family thanks everyone for their prayers and support during this time.”

His friends took to Twitter praying for his speedy recovery making #getwellsean a trending topic over the weekend. Singer Justin Bieber used the hash tag on his Twitter this weekend adding, “I will continue to support and pray for my friend.”

Kingston’s accident occurred in the wake of Randy “Macho Man” Savage’s death last Friday (May 20). The 58-year-old ex-professional wrestler suffered a heart attack and died while driving his car in Florida.
